The 'BigData' Policy Type Was Introduced Since Netbackup 8.1

The exponential growth of data lead the companies to use Big Data applications to streamline data processing within the business. Nowadays, the use of big data applications like Hadoop and hyper Converged Systems like Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV) has become the operating standard for companies who process masive amount of data, such as: telco companies, banking or e-commerce companies, etc.

Veritas NetBackup as one of the leading software in the data protection has been anticipating this needs. Netbackup has added a new type for backup the big data application by adding new policy type named as Bigdata. With the BigData policy type, the Netbackup will be inititated to backup the new data type different from pre-existing ones. The BigData policy  type was introduced starting from NetBackup version 8.1.

If we want to use the BigData Policy type in Veritas Netbackup 8.1, it requires a special license, as listed below:
  • To back up and recover Nutanix AHV virtual machines, you need the Enterprise Client license.
  • To back up and recover a Hadoop file system, you need the Application and Database license pack.
A BigData policy differs from other policies in the following respects:
  • You must specify BigData as the policy type.
  • The entries that are provided to add clients and to define backup selections, differ based on the application that you choose to back up.
  • During backup selection, you must specify certain parameters and their appropriate values.
